Scottish Curry Awards 2010
'Bukharah scoops restaurant and chef of the year awards'
At the prestigious Scottish Curry Awards held at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow, the Bukharah restaurant, part of the newly reopened Lorne Hotel, won the most sought after awards of the night, Restaurant of the Year and Chef of the Year.
The owner of the Lorne Hotel, entrepreneur Archie Sharif opened the stylish Bukharah Indian restaurant as part of the newly refurbished Lorne Hotel in August 2009. Already creating a storm in the city’s curry scene the Bukharah is not reliant on the custom of its hotel guests, word of mouth has allowed the restaurant to become a major competitor in Glasgow’s curry war.
After receiving the awards, Archie said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the Bukharah, to win both awards, I am absolutely delighted and want to thank all our customers for voting for us. The Bukharah offers something different to the curry connoisseur, it’s healthy Indian cuisine, exactly what it says on the door, home cooking at it’s best.”
Businessman Archie bought the A-listed historical hotel building back in 2007. With a successful background in Indian restaurants it was only natural the Lorne would include the Bukharah.
Chef Mahrukh hails from Pakistan and a 5 star background at the Sheraton in Dubai, she is the first female Asian Head Chef in Scotland a title she is proud of in a profession uncommon to young Asian women. Her passion for cooking began at a very young age, inspired by helping her mother in the kitchen. Mahrukh said: “I am delighted to have been awarded Chef of the Year, working at the Bukharah has allowed me to be creative in my cooking, I enjoy being able to come up with new healthy food dishes using fresh Scottish produce. The restaurant is part of a boutique hotel and not a global chain, it’s unique and to me that’s something special.
Mahrukh has brought her own imaginative style in home cooking to the Bukharah with traditional dishes from India. The menu lends itself to traditional Punjabi favourites such as Gobi Gosht to an impressive fish selection including delicate, moist monkfish kebabs hot from the tandoor.
The spacious, stylish restaurant has an American feel to it with exposed brick walls and large wooden partitions. With lush silk drapes and Timorous Beastie carpets, the Bukharah creates a warm relaxed vibe. Designed by the award-winning interior design company surface-id this chic restaurant is giving diners a fresh new curry experience.
